22 Jun How Diabetes Surgery helps in restoring Beta Cell function in non insulin treated type 2 Diabetes?
Diabetes is also known as sugar disease, which is known to mankind for many decades. The food we eat is broken down to glucose by our body and this glucose needs insulin to enter the body cells where it will be utilized to produce energy. Patients with diabetes either have a deficiency of insulin or Insulin resistance which develops in patients with truncal obesity. Diabetes is classified as Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is seen in young children when the body develops auto-antibodies against pancreatic Beta cells which produce insulin.
This results in the permanent destruction of insulin-producing cells and these patients need to take lifelong Insulin therapy.
Type 2 diabetes is also known as insulin resistance syndrome where the beta cells produce insulin, but the presence of excess visceral fat doesn’t allow this insulin to work and causes insulin resistance. This results in pseudo deficiency of Insulin and rise in blood sugar levels.
Diabetes treatment in Punjab for Type 1 patients includes purely Insulin therapy and for Type 2 patients includes drugs that work at different levels. At the onset of diabetes, the first aim is to control blood sugar levels by modifying the diet and exercise along with the start of Metformin. Metformin is a drug that is known to cause weight loss and works by decreasing insulin resistance and increasing the Peripheral sensitivity of insulin. If, despite taking medicine, blood sugars are still rising patients may require the addition of one or two drugs that enhance insulin production of beta cells and improve the sensitivity of insulin. Some patient needs incretin-based drugs to stimulate the pancreas for more insulin. Even after taking combination drugs, the patient has poor glycemic levels, one may require Insulin therapy to control blood sugar levels.
Diabetes treatment in Punjab now includes Bariatric and metabolic surgery, which aims at reversing diabetes by causing a modification of the gastrointestinal tract. Metabolic surgery is recommended as the first line of treatment for patients with a BMI of more than 40 Kg/m2 and as an alternative treatment for patients with a BMI of more than 27.5Kg/m2 who are not able to achieve glycemic control with diet and exercise along with medical and/or Insulin therapy. Diabetes treatment in Punjab includes a range of different procedures to suit people according to their stages of diabetes.
