With the increasing prevalence of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis knees, infertility, and cancers, more and more people are opting for Bariatric surgery as its the only treatment which has proven to be the only long-term solution to treat Morbid obesity. The increased acceptability of Bariatric surgery has led to increased demand for Bariatric surgery worldwide and many countries or organizations are promoting it as life-saving and life-changing surgery. Bariatric surgery has helped millions of people globally to lead a healthy, disease-free life. Has also increased life expectancy by at least 10 years.
The increasing demand for Bariatric surgery in Western countries has led to a huge waiting period and many people are now considering Bariatric surgery in India because of multiple factors. Bariatric surgery in India has evolved in the past decade and nowadays it’s almost performed in all major cities. The major reason for considering Bariatric surgery in India is the cost of surgery and the absence of any waiting period for scheduling the surgery in India. However, before considering Bariatric surgery in India, a few factors should be considered. Number one, is the expertise of a Bariatric surgeon, in his training, experience in handling complications, and post-surgery results. Number two, one must check the type of center at which you are getting your surgery done. The hospital or center must be a multispeciality hospital with a team of doctors to handle the complex patients.
It normally takes 4 days of hospitalization where on the first-day thorough assessment and investigations are done. Then pre-anesthesia check-up is done by the anesthetist. After this surgery is planned for the next day and on average it takes around 1 hour for the procedure. The patient is allowed to walk 2 to 3 hours after the surgery and is kept in the hospital for the next 2 days under observation so that the patient adapts to a new system. The patient is advised a post-surgery diet by the dietician and is then discharged on a liquid diet. The patient has to go through three phases of diet i.e from a liquid diet to a puree or soft diet and then to the normal diet. The patient is also counseled to adapt to a new lifestyle and eating habits and to take lifelong supplements. The overall process of getting Bariatric surgery in India is very easy.
